Traffic Jams on Spion
Categories: Video posts
Having just returned from a family trip (without my glider), I was keen to get back in the air.
The boys had been flying down the coast the day before with good strong conditions, but this day was forecast to be lighter, although speaking to some hard core pilots who slept on launch, it sounded like it was on.
So myself, Will Faulkner and Chris Dooley jumped in the mighty X-Trail and headed down.
We were greeted on launch with numbers of paragliders getting ready to setup, 1 hangy already landed and a few more setting up.
By the time I launched, there were already a few para gliders in the air, but there was plenty of space, so no big deal.
The lift was there, but fairly light, in mostly overcast conditions.
Boy did it get busy, hard to get an accurate count, as you couldn’t stop to look around and count everyone, but there would have been 10PG’s easily, and more and more hangies.
For the floaters it was not too bad, but the boys in the high performance wings had to stay right out of the way, and many were heading over to Eastern View to get out of the traffic.
I made my first successful crossing to Eastern View, made it right down to the end, but then was getting low and bombed out with a fair walk back to “Gentleman’s” pack up. It was tough work packing up in the sun watching all those people flying over me and listening to it all on the radio, so i took the glider back up to launch and jumped off again, this time in mostly sunny skies, with gently thermals coming through regularly. Over to Eastern View again for me, and back again. All hangies had good flights, a few PG’s in the bushes on launch, and not too many people on the beach to dodge on landing.
A quick drink at the pub, then off to Anglesea for some fish n chips.
Which is where we found the coolest couch ever. Does 15km/h, 4hr battery life, seats two comfortably – not sure where the glider rack would go, but it could be done…..

Excellent write-up Tim. Amazing footage Will! It was a really great couple of days despite the traffic, this is definitely my favourite location so far! My highlights were making it back up above the ridge from 10m off the beach and a few thrilling moments riding through other hangies’ wakes. It’s a spectacular sport.
Great video Will.Loved every bit of it, especially the shot of your shadow on the road. Keep them coming.
Cheers.
